Laugharne
The ancient
township of Laugharne is situated on the estuary of the River Tāf and is
home to one of Wales' most picturesque castles. Laugharne castle was built
in stone around the 13th centaury but is a ruin today. It has a splendid
restored Victorian garden and is set in a superb location on the estuary
inspiring many artists over the centauries including JMW Turner.
The Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, one of the greatest writers
of the 20th century, lived in Laugharne for 15 years off and on. He stayed
with the writer Richard Hughes at Castle House, Sea View, Eros and spent the
last 4 years of his life living at the world famous Boat House with Caitlin
his wife and their children Llewelyn, Colm & Aeronwy. Dylan is buried with
Caitlin at St.Martins Church on the edge of the town.
The Stable door is situated along the cobbled lane behind
the famous Town Hal & Clock Tower. Here the ancient court still meet
regularly and it also still houses an ancient jail cell.
Laugharne has many beautiful walks around the countryside
and along the estuary, after which you can relax at the Stable
Door Tapas Wine Bar to complete your visit. |
